Weakening of Bood Group A or B Antigen in Acute Leukemia - 6 Cases -

Abstract
Since the original report of van Loghem et al(1957), many cases have been discribed
in which the A antigen has been weakened in patients with acute leukemia. In
addition, weakend antigens of other than A blood group have also been reported.
During the period from January 1980 to September 1988 at Severance Hospital, the
authors experienced six patients of acute leukemia with ABO group discrepancies
between the red cell and serum groupings.
The red cell grouping showed no agglutination on both anti-A and anti-B sera, while
the serum grouping showed strong agglutination on the only one cell, A or B cell and
no agglutination the other.
Among the 6 cases, 5 turned out to be due to weakened A antigen, and the
remainging only one was due to weakened B antigen.
The break down of acute leukemias was as follows :
AML(M1) 3 cases AML(M2) 2 cases
AMoL(M5) 1 case
